Feb 2014: A Tiny Bit Marvellous

Heyyyy Everyone,

So February's choice of read has been A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn French. I was drawn to read this book because when I saw her promoting it in an interview she was explaining how much research she had done on the book, which included interviewing her teenage daughter and all her friends to get the teenage part written just right. Maybe I should explain the book a bit better for you to understand why this drew me in!

The book is written in the style of a diary. It takes 3 peoples point of views. The mum, Mo, is about to hit the big 50. The daughter, Dora, is about to hit the big 18. Then, the son, Peter, who has a chronic Oscar Wilde fixation. The idea behind the story is that no modern family is normal and the book goes through their day to day struggles as a family, with a few twists and turns along the way. Quite an interesting, light hearted read don't you think?

Well whether you have read this book or are currently considering reading it here's my view. One word, Disappointment. I never thought that my second book review would be a negative one but I have to be honest. The last 50 pages were BRILLIANT, but if only it was all that good. I spent the first 75% of the book reading just purely to finish and move onto the next book (I can never start a book and not finish it!). I skimmed past the 'Peter' sections because I hate the way it was written. I loved the 'Dora' sections but the fact that it is suppose to be written by an 18 year old is rubbish. Considering Dawn French supposedly did all this research into the character it was written like a 15 year old, not 18! Genuinely though, I dug out my diary from 2007 (so I was 14) and it was written in the same style, with the same sort of language. I cringed!

So I'm really sorry Dawn, but I had high expectations, and until the last 25% of the book them expectations weren't reached! Gutting!

Next month I will be reading 'A Street Cat Named Bob' by James Bowen. Read along with me and tell me what you think. Feel free to suggest books for me to read and review in the comments.
